Nestled beside the Zhonghua Gate Barbican of Nanjing‘s Ming City Wall, the Nanjing City Wall Museum is China’s only national first-grade museum dedicated to the city wall theme. Its most significant “exhibit” is not housed inside but stands outdoors—the historical Ming City Wall of Nanjing, which is over 650 years old and currently stretches approximately 25.091 kilometers in length. The building embodies the design concept of “presenting the wall,” with its L-shaped, green-gray glass curtain mirroring the ancient wall, surrounding trees, and streets, achieving a seamless fusion of architecture and heritage. The permanent exhibition, “The Magnificent Wall,” explores five key areas, including design philosophy and construction techniques, with over 700 inscribed Ming bricks serving as precious artifacts. Through digital technology, the museum has also “moved the wall to the cloud,” establishing the “Cloud Enjoying the Wall” platform, allowing the public to explore this grand, centuries-old project from anywhere.
