ACUUS 2027 takes the full lifecycle of underground space as its main thread and establishes ten core topics. Topic 1 — Sustainable Integrated Above–Below Ground Urban Development addresses the coordinated use of above- and below-ground spaces, and seeks to strike a balance between economic returns, environmental carrying capacity, and social needs over the full lifecycle.

Sustainable Integrated Above–Below Ground Urban Development

This track focuses on systematically integrating above-ground and underground spaces to advance urban sustainability across environmental, economic, and social dimensions. As cities grapple with land scarcity, climate change, and inadequate resilience, conventional expansion upward or outward is no longer viable. 

Underground space—as a hidden urban asset—can accommodate transportation hubs, utility tunnels, energy storage, flood detention, as well as vibrant underground retail, cultural venues, and public courtyards, thereby easing surface congestion, lowering energy use, and strengthening disaster preparedness.

We invite researcher in underground space studies to join the dialogue on shaping a truly sustainable urban future. We cordially invite scholars, researchers, and industry practitioners from home and abroad to submit papers on the various thematic topics of the conference.

ACUUS 2027 is committed to fostering international academic exchange and promoting the dissemination of research in the fields of underground space and tunnelling. Selected high-quality papers submitted to the conference may, following a rigorous selection process, be considered for publication in a Special Issue of Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology (TUST) and in a Regular Issue of Underground Space, providing an international platform for the dissemination of high-quality research and innovative findings.
